# What is AEO?

**AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. It describes how content has to be built so that an AI assistant such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Perplexity uses it directly as the answer and names the source. Classic SEO is about a good position in a list of links. AEO is about being the answer itself. In Switzerland, 76.1 percent of adults now use an AI tool regularly, and more than 40 percent of them use it instead of web search.**

A family in Wil is looking for an estate car. Three years ago they would have opened a search engine and worked through ten blue links. Today they type a whole question into ChatGPT: "We need an estate with plenty of room, automatic, under CHF 20'000, near St. Gallen. What should we look at?"

They do not get a list of links. They get an answer with three or four specific suggestions. And the question for your business is this: is your Skoda Octavia in that answer?

That is what AEO is about. This article explains the three abbreviations you are seeing everywhere, in plain words.

## Three abbreviations, one picture

Picture a large library.

**SEO** stands for Search Engine Optimization. It is the work of getting your book high up in the library catalogue. Anyone leafing through the catalogue finds you sooner.

**AEO** stands for Answer Engine Optimization. Here the visitor no longer consults the catalogue. They ask the librarian, and she reads an answer aloud. AEO is the work of making your sentence the one she reads.

**GEO** stands for Generative Engine Optimization. "Generative" means the AI systems that write their own sentences instead of listing places to look. GEO is the work of making the librarian know your business as a reliable source and name it.

The platform Searchable puts the difference in one sentence: _"Instead of just ranking on a results page, the goal is to become the answer itself."_ _([Searchable, "GEO vs SEO vs AEO", 31 March 2026](https://www.searchable.com/blog/geo-vs-seo-vs-aeo))_

| Abbreviation | Full name | Goal | Success looks like |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| SEO | Search Engine Optimization | A good place in the results list | Your link is on page 1 |
| AEO | Answer Engine Optimization | Being the answer itself | Your car is in the answer |
| GEO | Generative Engine Optimization | Being named as the source | Your name is under the answer |

In practice the three overlap heavily. Many practitioners use AEO and GEO almost interchangeably. For your working day one distinction is enough: the list of links used to be the goal, and now the answer is the goal.

## Why this counts in Switzerland now

The numbers are clear. According to a Comparis survey from March 2026, 76.1 percent of the adult population regularly use ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity, Grok or a similar tool. In 2024 it was 49.7 percent, in 2025 it was 62.4 percent. _([Netzwoche on the Comparis survey, 2 April 2026, 1'035 respondents](https://www.netzwoche.ch/news/2026-04-02/drei-viertel-der-schweizer-bevoelkerung-nutzen-bereits-ki-chatbots))_

**Share of Swiss adults using AI tools regularly, in percent**

| | |
| --- | --- |
| 2024 | 49.7 |
| 2025 | 62.4 |
| 2026 | 76.1 |

One detail of the same survey matters more than the headline figure: over 40 percent use a chatbot in place of web search. Those are people preparing a purchase without ever seeing a results list.

Search behaviour itself is changing too. Searchable gives a vivid measure: _"AI queries average around 30 words, compared to just 4 words in traditional search."_ "Estate automatic St. Gallen" becomes a full sentence with a budget, a family size and a towing weight.

That is good news for you. A long question carries many conditions. Anyone whose vehicle data covers those conditions properly suddenly gets very precise matches.

## The reassuring part: your existing work still counts

AEO does not replace SEO. The two build on each other. Searchable puts it this way: _"Overall, there's an 80% overlap between traditional organic rankings and content surfaced in AI search."_ Roughly 80 percent of what an AI quotes comes from content that also ranks well in the classic sense.

And a note of caution from the same source: John Mueller of Google warns against providers who guarantee rankings, because that is not how it works. The same holds for AI answers. The honest approach is to create the conditions. Nobody can offer a guarantee.

## What makes a car quotable

An answer engine prefers information it cannot get wrong. Four things decide that.

### 1. Complete facts rather than flowing prose

Year, mileage, transmission, drivetrain, towing weight, equipment. Every missing entry is a condition your car cannot meet inside a long question. A field left empty counts as "does not match", not as "maybe".

### 2. Unambiguous numbers

"Good condition" cannot be quoted. "First MFK inspection valid to 04.2028" can. The more precise the entry, the more likely it appears in an answer. The MFK is the official Swiss roadworthiness test; a date for it is hard information for a buyer.

### 3. Readable without extra technology

Many modern websites assemble their content inside the visitor's browser. To do that they need JavaScript, a programming language that runs in the browser. Some AI systems read pages without JavaScript. What they see is an empty shell. So every car also needs a simple, ready-written text version.

### 4. A clearly identifiable sender

Who is selling, where the car is, how to reach the business. An answer engine prefers a source it can attribute cleanly. Your company name and location therefore belong to every car, not only to the contact page.

## Who does what

These four points sound like technology. Most of them are technology, and that part is ours.

Auto Power Search generates a machine-readable version of every car automatically, translates technical fields into consistent language, and serves vehicle data so that an AI system can read it directly. How that works in detail is in [We help make your listings findable for AI](https://autopowersuche.com/en-ch/dealer/page/how-an-ai-finds-your-listing).

Your part is smaller and more important: complete, correct vehicle data. Every filled field is one more condition your car can meet.

## The three-minute test

You do not have to take our word for it. You can check today.

1. Open ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity.
2. Ask the question the way a customer would. For example: "I am looking for a family estate with automatic transmission under CHF 20'000 near St. Gallen. What is available?"
3. Look at which businesses and which cars get named.
4. Repeat the question using a car from your own inventory.

The result is your starting position. It varies from day to day, because these systems do not answer identically every time. That is exactly why preparation counts for more than any single test.

## In short

- SEO puts you in the list. AEO puts you in the answer. GEO puts your name under the answer.
- Three in four adults in Switzerland already use an AI tool regularly, and over 40 percent of them use it instead of web search.
- Around 80 percent of quoted content comes from sources that also rank well in the classic sense. Your existing work keeps its value.
- Complete data and unambiguous numbers are the biggest lever you hold yourself.

## FAQ

### Does AEO cost extra?

No. The machine-readable version of every car is part of the platform and is covered by the base fee of CHF 3 per car per month. There is no add-on package and nothing to switch on.

### Can I see when an AI has named my car?

Only partly, and that applies to the whole industry. An assistant does not always disclose its sources, and a click coming out of an answer often carries no identifiable origin. We are working on making that share visible, but we will not promise complete measurement while the systems themselves withhold it.

### Do I have to write my listing texts differently now?

No. Keep writing for people. The biggest gain sits in the data fields rather than the prose: fill the fields, give precise numbers, and state dates as dates instead of describing them.
